The EAHM Zurich Congress 2010 is now behind us. On behalf of the European and Swiss Associations of Hospital Managers we would like to thank everyone who attended the 23rd EAHM Congress held for the first time in Switzerland on 9 and 10 September 2010. These were two really fantastic days in Zurich with a wonderful audience, and even the weather was kind to us too. Over 500 people from all over Europe registered to attend the event, along with around 100 exhibitors and 50 escorts.
Together over the two days of the Congress (motto: "Roadmap to Top Quality“) we drew up an action plan and a strategy as to how the hospitals in Europe can achieve excellence in quality matters. It is essential for the hospitals to give serious thought to this issue if they are to survive.
Our aim was not to get together to moan about the constantly changing framework conditions in healthcare but rather to develop strategies for offering our patients optimal high quality care despite the shortage of funds and the increasingly tough efficiency targets.
16 speakers from different presented their own innovative and practical solutions. The aim was to learn from one another and develop solutions in concertation. We are delighted that the audience played such an active part in the discussions and can now take many useful ideas and suggestions away with them.

Poster session
For the first time this year there was a display of posters about effective quality projects that have been realised. Of the 33 posters submitted, 25 were selected for the competition and prizes totalling EUR 6000 were awarded for the three best posters.
Golden Helix Award
The Golden Helix Award 2010 went to the St. Joseph Foundation in Dresden.
Its inpatient, semi-inpatient and outpatient care services for patients with incurable progressive diseases and limited life expectancy have been brought together in a Centre for Palliative Care and Oncology and organised cross-sectorally.
New President: Heinz Kölking, Germany
At the Ordinary General Assembly on Thursday Mr Heinz Kölking, Director of the Welfare Maternity Hospital in Rotenburg an der Wümme, was elected as the new EAHM President.
We offer Mr Kölking our congratulations and wish him all the best in this demanding role
